What to See and Do

Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. The city was founded around 7 000 years ago in a close proximity to the Vitosha Mountain and has now turned into a real cosmopolitan city. As it is with other capitals, Sofia is the centre of the political, cultural and business life in Bulgaria. The city offers many international events, as well as theatres, operas, concert halls, museums and galleries. The place is also suitable for congresses, symposia, meetings and conferences because its business centre and hotels are very near the centre of the city. For the comfort-lovers there are many luxurious five, four and three-stars hotels. And for those who want comfort, rest and tranquility, there are many small private hotels in Sofia’s surroundings. As far as shopping is concerned Sofia can satisfy even the most demanding tastes. It has in avail not only glamorous shops with designer clothes, but also small antique shops, private and public galleries, jewellery and music shops and traditional craft studios.

Veliko Turnovo is a famous Bulgarian town on the outskirts of the Central Fore Balkan. The town is built on the banks of the Yantra River, on four hills, resembling an amphitheatre – Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, Momina Krepost and Sveta Gora. There is a caste on the hill Tsarevets, which used to be the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in the 12th century AC. The old town of Veliko Turnovo is still very well preserved. There can be seen Bulgarian Renaissance houses with their unique interior, workshops and other interesting sights. Some people nowadays consider it the most gorgeous town in Bulgaria and it also has administrative, economical and cultural functions. A must-see in the town is the audio-visual performance “Sound and Light” on the hill Tsarevets.

Balchik is a moderately large town, located in an inlet on the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea, 31km away from Varna. The area was first inhabited in the 5th century B.C. and was called Kmuni or Krounoi, due to its many karst springs. Later, it was renamed Dionisopolis (after the Greek god of wine). The town used to be very important for a long time. During the 13-14th century, the town was renamed to Dzhina Bair and turned into a fortification. After the Balkan War (1913), Balchik ended up as a town in Romania and the Romanian Queen Maria built a summer palace, a botanical garden, a chapel and a villa there in honour of the beauty of the place. Balchik is a climatic maritime resort of national importance since 1957. It is located 12 kilometers northeast of the resort complex Albena. It was founded as an ancient port by Hellenic colonists 2 400 years ago.

Varna is located at the end of the Varna Bay and is such an important town that some people call it the Sea Capital of Bulgaria. The water area of the place is well-preserved and the town still bears the traces of many cultures – ancient, medieval, renaissance and modern. Varna is at the same elevation as some other famous resorts in the Atlantic (Bayonne and Biarritz) and is built on a high, flat terrace of the bay, which curves 7km inland. Varna is perfect for holidays – it offers up to 10-11 hours of sunbathing a day from June to August and there is not cold wind, nor unbearable heat. What is more, the sea is calm, beautiful and without dangerous tides.
