Lake Balaton is one of the most precious natural treasures of Hungary. It is the largest lake of Central Europe, its length is 77 kilometres and its width ranges from 4 to 14 kilometres. On the sunlit slopes running towards the lake there has been grape and wine production going on since centuries. Either by car, bicycle, on horseback or on foot but you will surely find the most fabulous and wonderful face of Lake Balaton and one of the memorable moments will call you back, to Lake Balaton!

When and where to go to lake balaton?

Lake Balaton is worth to go all year round, but there are much more tourists and attraction on summertime. You can choose which side of the lake you prefer.
The Southern Side is flat plain, with only few hills. But the water is shallow, and warm, you can walk into the lake up to 60-100meters before the depth reach 1.5meters. So the southern side of the balaton is perfect for families with kids. No salt water, no jellyfishes. Only pure sweet water. There are many public beaches, shops, restaurants, cafes.

Balatonboglar, small town with great beach and nice wines.

The Northern Side is the hilly part with many great outdoor program such as horse riding, biking, wine tasting. The beaches are great here as well, and there are many historical sights like the Church of Tihany, the Herend Porcelain manufacture, Fortress of Nagyvazsony and the Festetich castle of Keszthely.

Tihany The only penninsula on the lake balaton, with the benedictine church on the top. Great panoramic view.

Getting around lake balaton

Train : There are good train connection around the balaton and to other cities like Budapest or Kaposvar. Travelpass available called BalatonMix, which include train and boat pass and a 50% discount return ticket to Budapest.
Buses : Good bus connection between towns and cities around the lake. Cheap ticket, you have to purchase it at the driver.
Bike : Bike route available around the lake balaton, usually separated from the main road.Check out bike routes
