What is the difference between couchette and sleeping cabin
Couchette is a 4-6 person cabin, with seats which can be turned into sleeping beds for the night. You can imagine when all 6 bed are turned, there are not much space to go over. Beds are vertically above/under each other. Turns, etc. usually done by the conductor, whom responsible for the couchette/sleeping part of the train
Sleeping cabins are for 2-3persons, with much more comfort. Single person cabins are available but only with a 1st class ticket
Direct trains and direct coaches
There are two type of direct access between cities. One is direct train, when the whole train with all its carriages go from a to b. The second (and more usual) when only a couple of coaches go from a to b, others go from a to c through b or else.
For expample: there are direct train from Budapest to Bar (montenegro). Half of the train is coming from Prague than a couple of coaches put together to Beograd and the train go from Budapest to Beograd and only the last 2 coach go to Bar.
Sleeping cabin vs. couchette vs. seats
Couchette is the most common in central and eastern europe, there are a 6-4 persons couchette, which offers normal comfort during night. It is absolutely ok for 1 night. But there are no mixed couchettes (or rely on the conductor of the train). There are male and female separated couchettes and sleeping cabins. So couples, families have to keep it in mind before booking.
There are trains (mostly daytime trains but several overnight as well) where seats available. These are usually cheaper than couchette or sleeping cabins. If there are not too many people, you still can lay down on the seat (as it is a 2-3 people seating pad), but comfort is lower than couchette.
Reservations
There are seat reservations available, but not a must on all international trains. Couchette and sleeping cabin tickets include the seat reservation which is in that case your sleeping cabin seat or couchette seat
Return or one way ticket
Most of the train companies like to sell return ticket. Those has a huge (40-60%) advantage compare to one way tickets. Sleeping cabin/couchette prices are fixed.
Discount and fixed price tickets
We are offering discounted train tickets as the train company do the same. Discount ticket means something like the low cost airline, there are number of places available for lower price. If you buy early enough there are discount price available. If no discount than full price which can be twice-three time higher.
Is discount available at the desk in the station?
Yes those are available if you buy tickets at the counter/desk at the station in Budapest or anywhere else usually in central and eastern europe. But if you do not have time or opportunity to buy that way, buy train ticket from us online.
Are the trains on time?
Yes, usually on time. Of course there are shorter, longer delays due to weather, track failure or other, but it is usually not more than 1hour, which is totally ok in the region :-)
Are there any refund due to delay?
Sorry, no.
Are the trains clean?
Yes, international trains are clean, toiled filled with water, soap, but you'd better have toilet paper, liquid soap with you
Smoking?
No smoking pls
Restaurant , Bar on wheels
All international train carries restaurant/bar coach, so you can have breakfast, lunch or supper while you are travelling. It is not cheap but international trains usually accept each others notes and coins, if not euro is ok. Not all accept card.
Newspapers, pillows , etc.
There are several trains where newspapers (mainly on 1st class) and pillows available
Travelling with small children
Railjet has special care for children with a children playcorner on several coaches, you have to ask the conductor or let us know if you are with children to book the right seats for you
Connections, change train
There are many train which is not direct, so you might have to change train. Usually it is not a problem as there are signs on the stations and connections usually wait for each other.
