Uzhgorod is one of the oldest towns in Ukraine, lying in the westernmost regional of Ukraine. Uzhgorod has 116,000 inhabitant.The city gets its name from the Uzh River, which divides the city into two halves (the old and new sections).

The Old Pidzamkoviy park is lying near the castle. Among exotic trees you can find the oldest tree in town with 600years old platan. Not from from here you can find the Ungvarska Bath, the local bath. Strolling along the middle aged street, Olbrakht, where plenty of wine cellars were situated before the Soviet times, we can drop in one of the best Botanical gardens in Ukraine, which has more than 3800 species of plants. Further you can see a magnificent building of monastery of St. Basil. Nowadays it is the home of the biology and physics faculties of the university, as well as the zoological museum.
After that our route goes to Uzghorod castle. It was built around 902. There are spacious vauilts in the castle catacombs, prison and torture chamber. Having left the castle, you can feel the same medieval atmosphere, as we pass the Transcarpathia museum of achitecture and culture. We take our walk up to the stairs to the first known street of Uzhgorod, the Kapitulna street, which brings us the Greek-Catholic Cathedral built in 1640. The bishop residence is adjacent to cathedral from the left. Walking through the famous Bata passage we come to the
Teatralna square. You can find here the biggest Jewish synagogue in Europe. Near this there is the children railways. Its length is about 1.5km. If you walk through the pedestian bridge over the river Uzh, you can enjoy a picturesque view of the lime-tree alley, the longest one in Europe. As we walk along the lime alley, we pass the Art Museum with more than 2000 works of art. If you have time you can visit the oldest operating church in Central Europe, the rotonda of St. Anna from the 12th century, or take a moment to visit the Monument of Ukraine to Soldiers, which celebrate the 25th anniversary of victory in the WWII.
Uzhgorod has been known for tourist recreation zones, beacuse of its leafy forests, thermal and mineral springs.
If you like thermal baths, try the local bath, where you can find steam baths as well such as hutsul and celtic baths, oil and russian steam baths.

The grape in Uzhgorod territory is known to be grown in the 3rd century. Enjoy a glass of local wine : Wine tasting : 18, Voloshyn str.

By car: From Kiev the distance is 790km, go through Lviv up to Veretskiy or Uzhotskiy mountain crossing. Or from Hungary : take M3 from Budapest till Nyiregyhaza, it is 90kms from Nyiregyhaza.

From Budapest you can take Kiev-Moscow daily train, get off at Chop (first stop in Ukraine), and take a taxi/bus from there. It is cheap and quite fast as well.
Unfortunatelly the direct flight from Budapest has been suspended.
Bus transfer from Budapest to Uzghorod available on request. Journey takes around 5hrs (depends on traffic on the border).
